The classic car blue book provides independent guidance for enthusiasts who are either in the buying or selling market.

Many car owners have no idea about where they can find the current value of their cars. As a result of this uncertainty many cars are sold well below their current market values.

This results in a bargain for the buyer, and an unknown loss for the seller. These cases would be isolated, but if you are lucky enough to find a classic being sold for well below it’s current market value, it’s your lucky day.

It was 1926 in Los Angeles, that Les Kelley decided to expand the list of automobile values he had been producing since 1918 and published the first list of Motor Car Values.

He named it after the Social Register, because it meant you would find valuable information inside.

His list showed a factory list price and the cash value on thousands of vehicles, from Cadillacs to Duesenbergs and others.

It became normal practice amongst car buyers and sellers to refer to it to find the current market price for their cars, while today car entusiasts search the internet using these terms.

Basically the term kelly blue book has grown from the original list of car values and highlights the original methods of searching for different types of car prices and values.

The link (above) provides information from the start of Les Kelley’s business in 1918 to the present day.

There are numerous and varied reasons why people may be looking for a current value of a partcular classic car. Whether they received it through an inheritance or simply discovered a rare classic in an old barn, the next thing they search for is the current value.

Other Companies providing values for older cars

Edmunds provide values for new cars and also for those manufactured prior to 1990.

They provide information under a term called “True Market Value” pricing, unbiased car reviews, ratings, and expert advice to help you get a fair deal.
