Classic car restoration and interior

A classic car restoration sometimes starts out as a hobby job, due to a relatives classic car suddenly being made available.

It could be a job on a car which has been stored in the shed/barn for who knows how long. Do you know someone who owns a car like that?

Once the classic car restoration has been commenced, it can be a long and winding road ahead, depending on the availability of time, expertise, auto parts and money. It’s good to set goals to cover different parts of the total job, which you can monitor and then be aware of the deadlines.

Interior Trimming

We will concentrate on the classic car interior trimming initially with occasional information about the body restoration of certain cars as they arise. The complete process of interior trimming will be explained over time, and will include a series of different workshops and photos as the cars are being completed.

One thing we all need to know is where we can gather the necessary auto parts and classic car interior trim pieces needed to eventually achieve a happy completion of the project. This depends on which country you are situated in and what type of car you are planning to restore.

Parts references and Trim Suppliers

You will find references to parts and trim suppliers from different countries and no doubt the closest suitable supply will be the go for you. Classic car body work is almost totally undertaken in the country where the vehicle is or unless spending many thousands on an overseas rebuild is not a problem.

Generally, with all restoration jobs it is best to make sure that everything is being done very well the first time round. This of course will seem to cost more, but may be a lot cheaper and quicker than having to go back and do most or all of it again.

Quality materials and clear thinking Tradesmen

Always use quality materials which will give you a quality finish (which has body quality and depth) and never try to rush a good tradesman, as this will almost always result in an inferior job. State very clearly what you want and listen to the replies very carefully.

As with all body and interior jobs you have to know which approach is the best for you and your situation.

Coachbuilders

Classic car restoration in total is an art in itself, as someone who does the body work, paint, mechanical and also the interior is not easy to find. Generally these people are referred to as Coachbuilders and many work on their own.

Links to websites

Occasionally you will find a link to another website which can be in the UK., Australia, the US or another country.

The classic car restoration goal is to have links to these websites so that anyone can find auto parts suppliers as near to them as possible.

You will see that the link above is to the DIY or "Do It Yourself" network and you will find, details of classic car restorations on video as well.

However, if the auto parts needed are small and light it is easy to have them posted worldwide.

Cost and time for Classic Car Restoration

You can spend a lot of money on your classic car restoration project, but you will have something of value which you have always wanted when you are finished. It is hard to do, but you should make some set times available and pick up the spanners.

Satisfaction on completion

Classic car restoration projects can certainly keep you busy for many hours on end, but it is the satisfaction of seeing sections completed which keeps you going. Each time you finish each part you are one step closer to realising your dream.

Also it is the fun of finding another classic parts car somewhere out bush and planning a trip with a few mates to bring it back.

Project Cars

At present, classic car restoration information is available for a 1964 Holden Station Wagon, a Valiant Charger, a Ford Zodiac, an XJ6 Jaguar, and an XD Falcon Sedan. Some of these details will be provided as we progress.

Please do not hesitate to contact us about any rebuild details at all.

Photo of XD Falcon Drag Seat

It's a little basic in this photo but you will see it retrimmed on another page dedicated to the XD interior rebuild.

Yours in classy classics,

Cheers,

Bob.
