Eh Holden wagon interior rebuild

Here are some details about making the eh holden wagon seat inserts. This job can be a little tricky as precise folding, smoothing, and sewing are needed to achieve a straight clean smooth fold.

Making the piping for all seats

The first job is to mark out all the piping material which may be needed and then cut them all to size. This is done with a special machine foot called a “piping foot” would you believe.

It can be time intensive and that is why a lot of motor trimmers opt for the ready made piping on a roll. The problem here is that it is mostly not the exact colour of the material which is being used now. So to keep everything equal and for a sharper job it is better to make the piping from the special material being used for the seats.

Making the eh holden inserts

Here is a view of the actual making of the stitch and roll pattern on the eh holden wagon bucket seats. As you look at the material which is under the sewing machine foot there is foam (half inch) on the bottom and the vinyl is being sewn onto the top.

There is a line drawn with a nikko pen on the foam on each side of the edge of the vinyl top piece. This is needed to ensure that the vinyl stays in a square position as it is progressively sewn from one end to the other.

If you ever do some sewing or trimming work make sure that you do not mark any vinyl with a Nikko pen, as it will show through to the front or either rub off onto some good material and destroy it.

Once a top stitch is sewn in the vinyl is then doubled back (as in photo) and stitched very carefully just in from the fold. It must be very straight as this also adds to the vinyl going off track and to the finished look.

After it is all sewn then you have a completed insert for the bucket seat or rear. They are all the same width with these seats. They also must all run the same way when being shaped to fit the seat.

After the insert is made the piping can be sewn on each side and then the outer lighter grey on the outside of the piping. Then you see the result in this photo below, where both the back and the seat pieces are all together.

There are hundreds of other little bits that are done but it is too hard to describe every little thing here. Hopefully for those of you who find this interior rebuild interesting, it will be enough to see what has been described here anyhow or please contact us if you have any queries.

Now the next step is to trim these pieces down to fit to the patterns on the foam underneath. Once these photos are to hand they will also be displayed here so that enthusiasts can find out exactly how the shapes are arrived at.

Here's a later photo of the bucket seats being finished off. A photo of the completed job will be available in the next week or so and will be added straight away.

This makes it easy for you to compare what they did look like to what they look like now in the photo below.

You can now see the completed seat with the skirts attached. When making the skirts you must measure to the joins and then add the side pieces.

Providing that the middle section is horizontal along the front of the eh holden wagon seat to the join, you can add the side pieces straight on and then pull them around the ends of the seat.

Make sure that the bottom is pulled in tight and if the top comes up above the seat piping join you have to trim the side piece back to match the piping line. Then when it is sewed on to the top pleated piece the side will fit nice and tight around to the back.

Sometimes you must cut this side piece a little deeper than you need so that when it is pulled towards the top as it goes around the end, you will have enough material to fit under the seat. Retrimming an eh holden wagon is certainly interesting.
