A photo of the coupe for you

-----------------------------------------

Here it is with the new bucket seats fitted

-------------------------------------------

Starting off

There is not a really clear photo of the seats in their original condition but you may be able to see the original patterns and condition under some of the inserts which were prepared and placed on the front of them.

There is some valuable Porsche interior restoration rebuilding steps here for you.

Original seats with covers on top

Original seat upholstery

A photo has surfaced of the bucket seats just the way they looked before the restoration. A seemingly strange design.

Porsche interior restoration - Base of bucket seat

The seat inserts have been made and were placed on top of the original seats mainly to see that they indeed are the right size. You need to check and recheck and measure and remeasure sometimes.

After the base of the bucket was stripped the centre and outside sections were built up with half inch foam, as the outside always sinks with use.

This also makes the seat sit nice and square and not down on one side.

Here is a photo of the insert which was made and retrimmed to sit neatly into the centre of the bucket seat base and back.

Here is the next photo with the top inserts with faces attached and trim lines marked in red to match the outside lines of the seat.

Always use a centre line as you can see marked in red. This keeps all patterns square and just right where they should be.

Next step is to make the seat base skirts or pieces which go from the seat top to the bottom. After working out the measurements, cut out the vinyl to obtain the correct join angles and then sew together.

When making each piece you should be able to lie it along the seat where it should fit for an exact template.

That’s why you need to mark the join lines in red, so you know where to mark the underneath of the vinyl.

Seat bases with skirts

Notice from the photo that each side is a mirror image of the other. The skirt is lying beside the base top insert and is on top of the back inserts.

Once you are happy with this piece it is ready to sew onto the trimmed seat top piece as you can see on the next photograph.

Notice the centre line extends from the top of the seat down the front also and the outside lines are where the joins of the side skirts will be. Already measured before the skirt is sewn together of course.

Sometimes a buyer may be lucky when buying a damaged wrecked Porsche for sale as the damage may be minor and the interior may need a retrim. No problems.

Porsche interior restoration - Top of bucket seat

Firstly we need to work out the sizes for the vinyl pieces and also the inserts. Normally the inserts for both the seat and back part are the same width, so longer inserts are made for the top the same time as the base ones.

Here are the vinyl pieces placed on the foam and ready for cutting out. After this the vinyl pieces are all glued to the foam with sprayable contact.

Before we get carried away, here is a photo of the stripped down bucket seat. So that you can get an idea of just what it is, or looks like.

Stripped down view of seat

To determine the size of the upright vinyl pieces necessary ruling and centre lines need to be marked onto the seat.

The top of each piece of vinyl has to be high enough to cover the highest point of the 45 degree angle join from the insert to the outside of the seat.

These Porsche interior restorations are exciting at first but then the headaches start with seat rebuilding and carpet underlay and carpet fitting, not to mention hood linings and door trims.

But the end results are always rewarding and satisfying. Your classic is on the road looking nice and sounding good.

Bucket seat top with set up lines

You will see the 45 degree angle lines drawn in here and the right hand side one has been changed a little.

The first line is not always right and after checking by squaring off, the errors pop up. Notice the red line down the piping line on the outside of the seat below.

When laying the finished cover on the seat it is easier to see where to mark it when it meets the red line. The base part of the bucket is already made and can be seen to the left of the back part. This photo is on the next page.

We will end this page here because of time and size constraints and continue on the next porsche interior restoration page.
